On the weekend of February 28 to March 1, 2009, Singapore hosted the Singapore Open 2009, a speedcubing competition that brought together competitors from across Asia. It was held at SAFRA Toa Payoh, a multi-purpose venue in the heart of Singapore, as an official World Cube Association (WCA) competition, and attracted competitors from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, India and Singapore.
Abel Brata and Arnold Ong from Indonesia competed in various events. Abel earned a podium place and a medal in Pyraminx, a pyramid-shaped puzzle that competitors must solve as quickly as possible.
Besides his podium finish, Abel also set several national records at the competition. A national record is the fastest official result ever achieved by a competitor from that country, and Abel’s records showed his exceptional skill and dedication to the sport.
Singapore Open 2009 was also notable for the presence of the world record holder in 5×5×5 Blindfolded, an event in which competitors solve the 5×5×5 cube blindfolded, relying solely on memory and spatial reasoning. The record holder, from India, impressed the crowd with remarkable speed and accuracy.
Overall, Singapore Open 2009 was a thrilling event for speedcubing fans and competitors alike. Abel Brata’s Pyraminx podium and his national records were just some of the highlights. With so much talent on display, it is clear that speedcubing continues to grow and evolve, drawing in competitors from all corners of the globe.
