On August 31, 2009, the first official speedcubing competition in Indonesia under the World Cube Association (WCA) was successfully held. It drew participants from Indonesia (the host), Malaysia, Singapore, the Netherlands, Belgium and other countries. Abel Brata set a national record in the Rubik’s Cube 3×3×3 event and finished on the podium in 3×3×3 Multiple Blindfolded.
The WCA is the international organisation that governs official competitions for the Rubik’s Cube and other twisty puzzles. Speedcubing, solving these puzzles as quickly as possible, has gained popularity worldwide and become a competitive sport with its own rules and regulations.
Indonesia, with its growing speedcubing community, hosted its first official WCA competition in 2009. The event was held in Jakarta and attracted participants from across Asia and Europe.
Abel Brata made his mark by setting the national 3×3×3 record with a time of 14.44 seconds. He also reached the podium in 3×3×3 Multiple Blindfolded, in which competitors solve several Rubik’s Cubes blindfolded within a time limit.
The success of this competition paved the way for more official events in Indonesia, giving local cubers the chance to compete internationally and show their skills. Since then Indonesia has hosted many WCA competitions, and its speedcubing community keeps growing.
As the first official WCA competition in Indonesia, Indonesia Open 2009 was a milestone for the country’s speedcubing community. It inspired local cubers to excel and opened the door for Indonesian speedcubers to compete and succeed on the international stage.
